The fashion brand Rodarte is leaping into a new area of design. Earlier this year the sister designers Laura and Kate Mulleavy made their debut on the big screen by creating 40 ballet costumes for the critical ‘‘Swan Lake’’ scenes in the much buzzed about film Black Swan. The sister’s love of film, and in particular the horror genre, has often played a part in the theatrical nature of their fashion creations and makes their choice to design for a thriller seem like an organic expansion of their work.

The movie stars Natalie Portman, a fan of the Rodarte brand, and the ballet scenes in the Darren Aronofsky film were choreographed by Benjamin Millepied. But now fantasy has become a reality as Mr. Millepied, so impressed by the Rodarte designs for the film, asked the sisters to collaborate with him to create the costumes for his new ballet. Entitled “One Thing Leads to Another”, the costumes for the ballet consist of white and grey pattered form fitting ensembles outlined with black and red cords that wrap about the body in a way that hints at the body’s circulatory system. The world premiere of Mr. Millepied ballet and the Rodate designs took place on Friday at the Het Nationale Ballet in Amsterdam.
